In North Tamarind the overall crime rate is 222% higher than any other place in the United States. North Tamarind is 0% safer than any other cities in Florida. It is a very densely populated area, where 73.8% of homes are run by single moms. Only 28% graduate from high school. One of the local high schools in recent years showed only a 35% passing rate in reading and math scores. We have interviewed leaders in the community and the recurring thoughts stated that violence, drug use, lack of education, lack of employment opportunities, and most of all, broken homes have left this community in a crisis.*

Our church wants to do something to combat the adverse effects of these issues. Our method is to help shepherd the young people by establishing active mentors in their lives. The Bible calls Jesus "Our Good Shepherd." Psalm 23 tells us how He shepherds His sheep. Before Jesus left the earth, He commissioned His disciples to teach throughout the world all He had taught. This essentially requires all believers to begin shepherding. We want to connect mentors to young people in our community to help guide them to a full and richer life. If you feel called to help us in this mission of mentoring by becoming a shepherd, please email
